Polymeric sand is a granular material that is swiped into the joints between interlock pavers in patios, walkways and driveways. The primary function is to improve the interlock and therefore the durability and stability of a paved surface. It will provide better contact between the joints, and will prevent the surface from shifting over time.
Polymeric sanding application will prevent water from seeping into the crushed stone base beneath the pavers. Without water beneath the pavement, the limestone will have no ability to migrate from one area to another, and the base is less likely to deform under traffic loads because water is not present. This means your pavers won’t shift for a much longer period of time in comparison to regular sweeping sand.
Polymeric sand hardens without extensive waiting periods, and has quickly become the recommended choice for joints of almost every stone surface. It will also prevent weeds from growing through, and prevent dirt and mud from building up in the joints between the interlocking stones.
The above sanding application is definitely more expensive than other materials, but incurring the initial cost is very worthwhile in the long run. This will allow you to save the costs of repairing interlocking that have shifted due to weak joints that fall apart due to water, weeds, dirt and mud accumulation.
